The stomach is the area our patients write to us about most, and the one where the honest answer matters most. CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared in the US for the abdomen since 2012, in people with a body mass index of 30 or under. In the manufacturer's abdomen study, 60 patients had up to two treatments and at four months independent doctors picked out the before photograph correctly in 85.3% of cases, with the fat layer 1.9 mm thinner. Satisfaction in that study was 62%; in our experience the stomach is where loose skin or a slackened muscle after pregnancy is most often mistaken for fat, which is why the clinician pinches the area first. Two to five cycles, usually no time off work, at Cool Clinic, 130 Harley Street, with the price in writing at a free consultation.
What it does and does not do
CoolSculpting clears fat cells in a bulge the applicator can draw in: a lower-stomach roll, an upper-stomach roll, or the mid-abdomen. It does not tighten loose skin, it does not close the gap between the two long stomach muscles after pregnancy, and it does not reduce fat behind the muscle wall, the kind that makes a stomach round and hard. The clinician pinches the area at the consultation: what you can pinch is fat CoolSculpting treats, what you cannot is something else. A muscle that has lost tone is EMsculpt NEO, which we also run at the clinic, and in our experience the two are often combined.
What the studies measured
- Manufacturer's abdomen study, 60 patients: up to two treatments on the abdomen, independent doctors picked out the before photograph correctly in 85.3% of cases at four months, the fat layer 1.9 mm thinner, 62% satisfied.
- Lower abdomen, 55 patients: the manufacturer's UK site reports an average 27% reduction in fat cells at six months.
- Cycles: three to five on the upper or lower abdomen and two to four on the mid-abdomen, by the 2022 expert panel; two applicators run at once, so two spots are treated in one visit.
The session and after
In our experience two to four cycles in a first visit of one to two hours, intense cold and pulling for the first minutes, then numbness. The area is red, firm and often bruised for a week or two and numb for one to three weeks; a hernia in or next to the area needs the clinician's judgment, and it is checked at the consultation. The result can start to show from about four weeks and is judged about eight weeks after the last cycle, when we take the after photograph.
Who it suits
A firm roll you can pinch, in our experience in someone close to the weight they want to stay at. The worth it page sets out who responds, and the full guide covers the rest.
