Bra fat is the roll that sits beside the bra strap at the side of the chest and the roll under the band, the two our patients call the bra puff and the underbust roll. CoolSculpting has been FDA-cleared in the US for bra fat since 2016, in the same clearance as back fat and the fold under the buttocks. Why this area
Each roll is a firm pad the applicator draws in whole, and the two applicators run at once so the left and right sides are done together. Cooling the roll to the temperature at which fat cells break down leaves the skin and the tissue around it unharmed, and the body clears the cells over the following weeks, so the strap sits flat. The upper bra line and the lower bra line are counted as separate zones.
What the evidence is
The 2016 clearance rests on the device working the same way at every site and on a review of 4,792 published treatments, not on a study of bra fat itself, and we say so. The manufacturer's 2022 expert panel set two to four cycles for the upper bra line and two to four for the lower, both sides together. In one of the largest published series, 3,262 patients over 18,203 cycles across every area, the median patient had four cycles.
The session and after
One cycle per zone per side, 35 to 60 minutes each, lying on your side or front, intense cold and pulling for the first minutes and numbness after. The area is red, firm and often bruised for a week or two and numb for one to three weeks. In our experience a soft bra is more comfortable for the first days. The result can start to show from about four weeks and is judged about eight weeks after the last cycle, when we take the after photograph.
Who it suits
A pinchable roll beside or under the bra in someone whose weight is steady, with a body mass index of 30 or under for the body areas. A soft side without a roll to pinch is skin rather than fat, and the clinician says so at the free consultation.
